The file that tells AI engines about you (llms.txt), explained for owners

If you've heard the term "llms.txt" and assumed it's an engineering thing that doesn't concern you, that's a reasonable guess — and it's wrong. It's a small text file that sits on your website and does one job: it tells AI engines about you, in plain language — who you are, what you do, and where to find the details. Think of it as the elevator pitch you'd hand a new employee on day one, except the reader is an AI deciding whether to recommend you.
Here's why it matters. When an AI answer engine tries to figure out whether to cite your business, it's piecing together a picture from whatever it can crawl and parse — and a lot of what's on a typical small-business website is images, navigation menus, and marketing copy that's easy for a human to skim but genuinely hard for a machine to extract clean facts from. llms.txt cuts through that. It's a direct, structured statement instead of something the AI has to infer.
A good llms.txt is short. It states your business name, what you actually do (specifically — "we manage 40 short-term rental properties in Austin," not "we provide hospitality solutions"), your service area, and links to the pages that back that up — your services, your service area, how to contact you. No marketing fluff. The AI isn't your customer; it's trying to extract facts fast so it can decide whether to recommend you to one.
You don't need an engineering degree to write one, and you don't need a developer to add it — it's a plain text file at a predictable location on your site (yoursite.com/llms.txt), similar in spirit to the robots.txt file that's existed for decades. The bar to get this right is low. The number of small businesses that have done it is still low too, which is exactly why it's worth doing now rather than later.
This isn't a silver bullet on its own — it's one input among several (reviews, content, listings) that AI tools weigh when deciding who to cite. But it's the cheapest, fastest one to fix, and it's the clearest signal you can send that says: here's exactly who we are, stop guessing.
